Turns Out I wasn’t Alone Having That “Ick” Feeling at Work
Apr 10
@HireCentrix posted a link to on Twitter to this article that reminded me of something I’d suppressed…
I used to have this co-worker who turned nearly everything that was said into some sort of sexual innuendo. Although, I am pretty sure he was only trying to be funny and not intimidating or predatory… ICK!
What’s funny about this is that I’ve been known as “one of the guys” in the past. I mean, one could say pretty much anything in front of me, and I wouldn’t be offended. But this guy… ICK!
Turns out, I’m not alone.
A study done by researchers from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Management took a look at sexual banter in the workplace. They wanted to see whether people who enjoyed this sort of behavior benefited from what the researchers thought would be enhanced social connections.
Turns out, no one really benefitted. Work performance wasn’t better. Those who were explosed to the banter tended to show less engagement. They felt less valued, drank more, and reported more depression symptoms.
So, my friends, creators of your “Inspired Workplace” what are you going to differently now that you’re armed with this information?
